Fashion As Clothes

Fashion is a unique form of autonomy and self-expression in a certain time and venue and in a certain context, of clothes, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, hairstyle, body posture, and style. The word implies a look entirely defined by the fashion industry when what is fashionable is what is popular. However, this is not always so. Trends may develop suddenly, but are temporary; fads may grow out of nowhere, but also seem like they’ve been there for a long time. The important thing is to be able to distinguish the trend from what is merely popular.

Fashionable materials are usually characterized by high density of fabric, high degree of flexibility, good cut, and appropriate coloring and detailing. Accessories are meant to compliment the total look, thus matching it with the dress or trousers. It is the idea of “fashion as clothes” that makes it an important art for all designers. The fashion industry monitors the most popular trends and changes them, making room for new styles and designs which become the next fad.

New fashions on the market have to be compatible with established trends, otherwise, the whole concept will fail. This is why retailers take great pains to ensure that their merchandise can easily go well with the latest fashionable styles in the fashion area. Some fashions and accessories just stay in fashion because they are very versatile while some remain popular due to their longevity, novelty, or uniqueness.
