Poker is a card game that can be played by two or more players. The game is played with a deck of cards and betting takes place before, during and after the deal. The goal is to make the best five card hand possible using the two personal cards in your hand and the five community cards on the table. The person who has the best hand wins the pot. Depending on the rules of your particular game you may also have to place an initial amount into the pot before the cards are dealt these are known as forced bets and come in the form of antes, blinds or bring-ins.
The key to winning in poker is to play a wide range of hands aggressively. This means that you should be raising pre-flop in most positions, especially EP and MP. Moreover, you should be raising and re-raising other players to force them to fold pre-flop. In the long run, this will be much more profitable than calling and folding.
As you move up the stakes it is important to observe other players to learn their tells. These can include a player’s eyes, idiosyncrasies, body language, betting habits and more. If you notice that a player always calls and then suddenly raises it’s likely that they have a good hand. Similarly, if someone stares at you it is usually a sign that they are bluffing. By observing these tells you can develop quick instincts and win more often.
