Fashion – What it Means and Why it Matters
Fashion is a broad genre of clothing, footwear, makeup, hairstyling, and even body posture and attitude in a certain time and place and at a certain context. In its broader usage, however, the word also indicates a perceived appearance as being defined by the fashion industry at what is currently trending. Trends are not set by actualfactual fact but are rather determined by consumer demand. In the past many stars have been the topic of fashion trends and some of these have become overnight sensations. Celebrities in the music world such as Kanye West, Lady Ga, Paris Hilton and Jennifer Lopez have all fallen under the heading of fashion trendsetters.
However, one of the biggest trends which seems to be taking the fashion world by storm is the skinny jeans trend. This has taken the fashion world by storm as people are instantly attracted to its casual lifestyle and unkempt appearance. Many celebrities have fallen foul of this fashion and found themselves the object of ridicule in the most petty of ways. However, there are more positive aspects to this trend and some people actually enjoy it; it has led to a reduction in the stigma surrounding wearing ripped jeans in public. This has led to people coming out of the shadow of superstars and becoming symbols of good taste and style in their own communities and towns.
Even fashion gurus agree that it can take 20 years for a particular trend to begin to lose its popularity. For instance, during the height of the AIDS epidemic, jeans were often the first victims of fashion trends. Slowly they were pulled out of mainstream fashion and AIDS awareness became a symbol of the fight against the disease. Today, many people choose to wear jeans when they are traveling as they are comfortable and easy to put on and take off.
